Can I get Life Insurance/Assurance and Mortgage Protection if I’ve had Cancer?

Updated: Apr 5, 2023

Cancer is the most prevailing medical condition in Ireland.

Cancer life insurance premiums can differ significantly from one insurance provider to another depending how they assess whatever type of cancer you have or have had.

Most insurance providers will view cancer life insurance in a similar way in terms of when primary treatment or any chemotherapy had been completed (normally must be 2 years)

Insurance providers will usually require precise details about your cancer such as.

*What type of cancer did/do you have?

* What grade of cancer did/do you have?

*What stage of cancer did/do you have?

* Where was/is the location of your Cancer

*What treatment did you get? ( eg Radiotherapy,Chemotherapy, Mastectomy or Lumpectomy)

* How long since you have completed treatment?

Cancer life insurance premiums will also be subject to whether any lymph nodes have been affected and the extent of how aggressive the cancer is. This can potentially result in significant increases to premiums or loadings.

Life insurance cover can also be deferred or cancelled for a number of years after treatment has finished to ensure that there is no relapse or re-occurrence which can be frequent in certain types of cancer.

Can I Get Critical Illness Cover If I Have Had Cancer?

Getting Critical Illness Cover if you have had cancer will depend on how long it has been since you had any treatment and how aggressive the severity of your cancer was.

If accepted, cover will usually be offered with a cancer exclusion and a premium loading depending on the level of risk involved.

In determining Cancer Critical Illness Cover applications, there may be a duration of time where cover is deferred or even declined where the cancer has been more aggressive or treatment has been diagnosed fairly recently.

Is It Possible To Get Income Protection If You Have Had Cancer?

Depending on the type and severity of your cancer, income protection can be covered in certain circumstances.

Most applications will require additional underwriting and corroborative evidence from your GP to support your application.

Normally, there will be a cancer exclusion if income protection cover is accepted or there may be a longer duration period from when treatment concluded.

Mortgage Protection Insurance is also available and can be discussed in relation to all of the above.
