Can you get Life Insurance/Assurance if you are overweight?

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

The majority of medical professionals agree that once a person attains a BMI

( Body Mass Index) score of 25 to 30, they are considered to be overweight.

If you are looking for life insurance and you are overweight, standard rates are possible with some insurers if your BMI is showing below 30 and provided you are in perfect health with no underlying associated conditions.

Your overall BMI figure will ultimately determine the cost of your premium.

When assessing your application, insurers will want to know about your family history and if you have any underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol levels, diabetes etc.

Is Serious Illness Cover available for those who are overweight/with a high BMI?

Critical Illness cover is available to those with a manageable BMI score. However, for those with a particularly high BMI score, underwriters will want a full medical report before offering cover as this could place you at greater risk of developing one of the conditions on the more serious critical illness list.

Mortgage Protection Insurance is also available if you are overweight, and can be discussed in relation to the above.
