Pension Tax Relief Ireland 2026: Can You Reduce Your 2025 Tax Bill Before 18 November?

There may still be time to reduce your 2025 Income Tax bill while putting more money towards your retirement.

If you qualify for the extended Revenue Online Service (ROS) deadline, a qualifying pension contribution made by 18 November 2026 could be eligible for tax relief against your 2025 earnings.

For self-employed professionals, company directors making personal contributions and other eligible taxpayers, this is a useful opportunity to review any unused pension tax-relief allowance.

How does backdating pension tax relief work?

You may be able to make a qualifying Personal Retirement Savings Account (PRSA) or PRSA Additional Voluntary Contribution (AVC) payment in 2026 and elect to claim the tax relief for 2025.

This can help you:

·        Reduce your 2025 Income Tax liability.

·        Increase your retirement savings.

·        Use an available tax-relief allowance based on your 2025 age and eligible earnings.

Paying into your pension is only part of the process. You must also make the election to claim relief for the earlier year within the applicable deadline.

What is the pension tax-relief deadline for 2026?

The standard deadline was 31 October 2026.

The extended deadline is Wednesday, 18 November 2026, for eligible customers who meet Revenue’s ROS requirements. For self-assessed taxpayers, this means completing the required online filing and payment, including the 2025 Income Tax balance and 2026 preliminary tax.

Do not assume that filing online alone qualifies you for the extension. Check your position with your financial advisor or accountant, and allow time for your pension provider to process the contribution.

How much tax relief could you receive?

Qualifying personal pension contributions can receive Income Tax relief at your marginal tax rate, subject to your available allowance and the amount of income taxable at that rate.

For example, where the full contribution qualifies:

·        At 40% Income Tax relief, a €1,000 contribution could cost you €600 after relief.

·        At 20% Income Tax relief, a €1,000 contribution could cost you €800 after relief.

Personal pension contributions do not receive USC or PRSI relief.

Example: A €20,000 contribution with a €12,000 net cost

Consider someone who was 50 in 2025, with €100,000 of eligible earnings.

Their age-related limit is 30%, giving a potential tax-relievable contribution allowance of €30,000.

If they have already contributed €10,000 against that allowance, they could have €20,000 of remaining capacity.

Assuming the additional contribution qualifies fully for relief at 40%:

·        Additional pension contribution: €20,000

·        Income Tax saving: €8,000

·        Net cost after tax relief: €12,000

This is an illustration, not a guaranteed saving. Your available relief depends on your earnings, tax position, existing contributions and pension arrangements. Pension charges may also apply.

Pension contribution tax-relief limits by age

The standard age-related limits are:

·        Under 30: 15% of eligible earnings

·        30–39: 20%

·        40–49: 25%

·        50–54: 30%

·        55–59: 35%

·        60 and over: 40%

An annual earnings cap of €115,000 applies when calculating personal pension tax relief. These percentages limit the contributions eligible for relief; they are not the tax-relief rates themselves.

Existing personal pension contributions must be taken into account. For PRSA AVCs, contributions to your workplace pension can reduce the allowance available.

What should you do before 18 November?

1.     Check your 2025 earnings and age-related allowance.

2.     Deduct relevant contributions already made for 2025.

3.     Confirm your eligibility for the ROS extension.

4.     Arrange an affordable contribution in good time.

5.     Make the election and complete the required tax return and payment by the deadline.

Tax relief is valuable, but the contribution should also fit your wider finances. Keep sufficient accessible savings for everyday spending and unexpected costs.
