Will a Mini-Stroke affect my chance of being approved for Life Insurance/ Assurance?

Updated: Apr 5, 2023

A transient ischaemic attack ( mini-stroke) occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is blocked or reduced thereby depriving brain tissue of vital oxygen and nutrients.

A TIA will often last for a very short period with little or no symptoms after 24 hours. A TIA can happen prior to a full-blown stroke and it is important that precautions are taken to minimise the risk.

In certain circumstances, it is possible to get life insurance cover for TIA at standard normal premium terms. This would be dependent on the extent and severity of your mini-stroke.

When making an application for life cover, Insurance underwriters will want to know...

* Exactly when did your mini-stroke happen?

* How many mini-strokes have you had?

* Details of ongoing symptoms

* Was your mini-stroke diagnosed as connected to another medical condition.. e.g.high cholesterol?

* Details of your current prescribed medication

The insurance providers will probably also require a full medical history report from your doctor to support your application.

Can I get Income Protection Cover after having a mini- stroke?

When making an application Income Protection after having had a mini-stroke, it is likely that there could be a cerebrovascular exclusion on the policy which can include exclusions for a full stroke or brain haemorrhage.

As with life insurance, underwriters will require precise details of your TIA experience together with a full medical history report from your doctor.

Can I get Mortgage Protection after having a mini- stroke?

Mortgage Protection Insurance is also available and can be discussed in relation to all of the above.
